FAQ

Do I need any music experience? What if I’m a complete beginner?

Not at all. Our beginner program is designed for complete beginners with zero music experience. We guide you step by step from the very beginning, and handpans are provided during class.

Unlike learning only through online videos, our in-person classes allow your instructor to work with you one-on-one within the group and check your technique, hand position, touch, sound quality, rhythm, and playing posture. Small details can make a big difference in the sound of the handpan, so you’ll receive immediate feedback and corrections as you learn.

You’ll also have the opportunity to try different handpans, scales, and note layouts, helping you understand the instrument before deciding to purchase your own.

Is a handpan provided?

Yes 😊 We provide a handpan for each participant during class.

What is the price?

North York: $125 total for 5 weekly classes 😊
Midtown: $165 total for 5 weekly classes

Both locations follow the same beginner program and teaching structure.
Flexible option (+$20) is available for students who need additional scheduling flexibility.

What is the schedule and how long is one semester?

Each beginner semester includes 5 consecutive weekly classes(1 class per week, 60 minutes each). 😊
Simply choose one location and one class time that works best for you.
Both locations follow the same program and lesson structure — the only difference is the location.

What if I miss a class?

If you miss a class, you’ll receive the lesson video and practice materials so you can keep up at home.

Standard: Your registration is for 5 consecutive weeks on your selected day and time. If you know you’ll be away, please inform your teacher at least one week in advance . You may attend a same-level class at another available time, subject to space, or receive a one-week extension. This flexibility is available once per semester..

Flexible (+$20): Includes one schedule change OR one-week extension per semester without the one-week advance notice requirement. Schedule changes are subject to availability.

What’s the difference between learning online and joining an in-person group class?

Online videos can be a great resource for learning patterns and ideas, but they cannot provide personalized feedback on how you are actually playing.

In our in-person classes, your instructor works with you individually within the group, checking your technique, hand position, touch, sound quality, rhythm, and posture. You receive immediate feedback and corrections, helping you build strong playing habits from the beginning.

Group learning also gives you the opportunity to learn by observing other students, recognize common mistakes, and understand how to correct them. Playing together helps develop your timing, listening, coordination, and confidence as part of an ensemble.

Our classes follow a progressive learning path. Students who continue developing their skills may also have opportunities to join Toronto Zen Music community performances and student ensembles, typically after approximately 3 months of training, depending on readiness and the performance.

What happens after registration?

After registration, and before your class starts, you’ll be invited to the class WhatsApp group where we share the full address, parking details, entrance instructions, lesson videos, and class updates 😊
